Peer Reviewer Process

Every manuscript submitted to AZWA: Journal of Islamic Education undergoes an initial editorial screening to evaluate its conformity with the journal’s focus and scope, compliance with author guidelines, completeness of submission, and overall academic quality. Manuscripts that pass this preliminary evaluation proceed to the formal peer review stage.

The journal implements a double-blind peer review system in which the identities of both authors and reviewers are concealed to ensure objectivity, fairness, and academic integrity. Each eligible manuscript is reviewed by at least two independent reviewers with relevant expertise in the field of Islamic education.

Review Stages

1. Editorial Assessment

The Editor evaluates whether the manuscript aligns with the journal’s scope and meets scholarly and formatting standards. At this stage, the Editor may reject the manuscript if it falls outside the journal’s focus, does not comply with submission requirements, or demonstrates insufficient academic merit. Manuscripts meeting the criteria proceed to peer review.

2. First Round of Peer Review

The manuscript is sent to at least two qualified reviewers who are experts in Islamic education or related disciplines. Reviewers assess originality, methodological rigor, theoretical contribution, clarity of analysis, relevance of references, and overall scholarly significance. Reviewers provide constructive feedback and recommend one of the following decisions: accept, minor revision, major revision, or reject.

3. Revision and Resubmission

Authors are required to revise their manuscripts in accordance with reviewers’ comments and submit a revised version along with a response letter explaining how each comment has been addressed. Revised manuscripts may be returned to the original reviewers for further evaluation before a final decision is made.

4. Final Decision

The Editor makes the final publication decision based on reviewers’ recommendations and the quality of revisions submitted. The Editor’s decision is final.

The average review process typically takes approximately 2–8 weeks, depending on reviewer availability and the extent of revisions required. AZWA is committed to ensuring a timely, transparent, and academically rigorous review process.
